What is Unity?

Unity is a game engine used to create professional video games. It allows students to learn fundamental programming concepts in the context of creating video games. In Unity, students can create and customize objects, backgrounds, and events to create a 3D video game.

About our class

New Class!  Students will learn to use Unity, a powerful programming suite used by professionals and indie game developers, to make and mod micro-video games. We’ll make speed booster pad, custom triggers, track twists, animations, and more. Learn to make video games more fun by creating custom modifications. The software is available to download at home for free. Please bring a USB drive to class.

After the class

In this course, students were introduced to the game engine Unity and were taught about game design principles as they created their own video game.

Parent activity suggestions:

  • Programming in Unity involves creating objects, events, and scripts that come together to make a game. Ask your child to tell you how they create these in class. Also ask him/her to demonstrate what each of these is in his/her game.
  • Designing a game requires knowing what aspects make a game fun to play. Play your child’s favorite game together, and ask him/her what makes that game fun. Why are those things fun? Is there anything that could be changed to make it better?

To play your game:

Run the exe file in your Builds folder to play your game!
