What is engineering?

Engineering is the use of science, technology, and physics to design and build machines and structures. Legos are a great way to help introduce children to the concept of engineering and building structures.

About our class

Have a blast using LEGO® Techics® Engineering Kits to explore the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in a team-based environment. During each session, we will be exploring new engineering principles such as gears, wheels, levers, and pulleys. Then we will build working theme park rides and machines that reinforce concepts learned. After each building project, students will customize, share, compete in challenges and enjoy experimenting with their creations. Possible models include Catapult Games, Crazy Floors, Merry-Go-Rounds, Go-Karts, Moving Clowns, Popcorn Carts, and more.

After the class

This class introduced your student to the basics of engineering using LEGO® Educational Division materials and building kits.  By building machines and mechanisms, your student got an understanding of mechanical and structural principles built into everyday machines.  The course was broken down into the following four areas: levers, gears, wheels and axles, and pulleys.

Parent Activity Suggestions:

  • Your child used Lego blocks to build learn about gears, wheels, levers, and pulleys. Ask him/her to identify Lego pieces by name.  Ask your child to tell or show you what some items in your home have gears, levers, wheels and pulleys.
